About
NIAD Art Center (National Institute of Art and Disabilities) was founded in 1982 in Richmond, California to promote creative expression, independence, dignity, and community integration for people with disabilities. Now in its 42nd year, the studio supports 75 adult artists with intellectual and developmental disabilities alongside a staff of 30 working artists and creatives.
What It Does
NIAD's professional studio programme offers supported practice in drawing, painting, printmaking, ceramics, fabric arts, and creative writing. Artists' work is sold through an on-site gallery and an online store, with artists retaining 50% of all proceeds. NIAD provides professional gallery representation and has placed artists' work in internationally recognised museum permanent collections.
Who It Helps
NIAD Art Center serves adult artists with intellectual and developmental disabilities in the San Francisco Bay Area. The centre's model of professional artistic support has enabled artists to achieve gallery and museum recognition far beyond what traditional day programme settings make possible.
