About this resource

About

PATH International (Premier Association for Therapeutic Horsemanship International) is the North American accrediting and membership organisation for equine-assisted activities and therapies (EAAT). Founded in 1969, PATH sets standards for safety and quality at more than 900 member centres across the US, Canada, and internationally.

What It Does

PATH accredits centres that offer therapeutic riding, hippotherapy (physical, occupational, or speech therapy using the horse's movement), driving for people with disabilities, interactive vaulting, and equine-facilitated learning. The PATH website includes a centre locator allowing families to find accredited programmes near them. PATH also certifies instructors and provides professional development resources.

Who It Helps

Children and adults with a wide range of physical, cognitive, sensory, and psychosocial disabilities — including cerebral palsy, autism, multiple sclerosis, PTSD, and Down syndrome — who benefit from horse-assisted activities for recreation, therapy, or both. Services are provided by member centres at varying costs; many offer scholarships.
