About this resource

About

Founded in 2004 and based in Chicago's Bridgeport Art Center, Project Onward brings together artists with mental health disabilities and developmental disabilities in a professional studio setting. The organisation is recognised nationally as a leader in disability arts for its emphasis on artistic excellence alongside personal support.

What It Does

Project Onward provides free studio space and art supplies to 60+ artists Monday through Friday, with facilitation and professional guidance. The in-house gallery presents work locally and through travelling exhibitions, with artists keeping 50% of pre-tax sales proceeds. The programme also facilitates community activities — museum visits, sports events, cultural outings — to broaden artists' horizons beyond the studio.

Who It Helps

Adults with mental health disabilities and developmental disabilities in the Chicago metropolitan area who want to create visual art in a professional, supportive, and cost-free studio environment.
