About this resource

About

Founded in 2004 and located at the Bridgeport Art Center on Chicago's south side, Project Onward is a non-profit progressive visual arts studio dedicated to the creative growth of adult artists whose lives are impacted by mental illness and developmental disabilities. The organisation grew from a programme serving young people aged 16–18, expanding to provide a permanent, adult-focused professional studio.

What It Does

Project Onward serves over 55 artists with free studio workspace, art materials, and individualised mentorship from a team of professional artists. Artists develop a meaningful body of work and receive support in building both their artistic vision and a professional business plan. Artwork is exhibited in the Bridgeport Art Center gallery and at partner venues; 50% of each sale goes directly to the artist, with the remainder funding the programme.

Who It Helps

Adults living with mental illness and/or developmental disabilities in Chicago who want to pursue visual art as a professional practice in a supported, community-centred studio environment.
