About this resource

About

Rock Steady Boxing (RSB) was founded in 2006 in Indianapolis, Indiana by Scott Newman, a former Marion County Prosecutor diagnosed with young-onset Parkinson's disease at age 40. Newman found that boxing training dramatically improved his Parkinson's symptoms — and the programme he built has since grown to more than 900 affiliated gyms in all 50 US states and 21 countries.

What It Does

Rock Steady Boxing classes are non-contact and specifically designed for people with Parkinson's. Exercises — punching bags, agility drills, balance work, and core strengthening — target the neuromotor deficits caused by Parkinson's: tremor, rigidity, slowness, and balance impairment. Classes are led by RSB-certified coaches and are adapted to every stage of the disease, from early to advanced. Many affiliated gyms offer scholarships or reduced-cost memberships.

Who It Helps

People with Parkinson's disease at any stage and any age. Research studies have documented improvements in balance, gait, strength, and quality of life in RSB participants. Use the affiliate finder on the website to locate the nearest programme.
