About
Sit and Be Fit was created in 1987 by Mary Ann Wilson, a registered nurse specialising in geriatrics and post-polio rehabilitation. What began as a gentle chair exercise class for seniors at a Spokane community centre evolved into a nationally broadcast PBS television series now airing on over 100 PBS stations across the United States. Wilson has received multiple fitness industry awards for her contribution to accessible and functional exercise.
What It Does
The website and TV series provide gentle, fully seated routines targeting flexibility, strength, balance, and coordination — what Wilson calls "functional fitness." Episodes address core strengthening, stretching, relaxation, and specific body regions including wrists, shoulders, hips, and ankles. Free episode clips are available to stream on the website alongside DVD collections for purchase.
Who It Helps
Older adults, people who have difficulty standing, wheelchair users, and anyone who benefits from slow, gentle movement. Widely used in rehabilitation settings, senior centres, and by individuals managing arthritis, multiple sclerosis, stroke recovery, osteoporosis, or COPD.
