About this resource

About

Special Yoga (also known as Yoga for All Abilities) grew from Sonia Sumar's pioneering work with her daughter Roberta in the 1970s. Now active internationally, the programme has trained teachers across dozens of countries to bring adaptive yoga to children and adults with neurodevelopmental and physical conditions.

What It Does

Special Yoga offers a 95-hour teacher certification programme, private classes via licensed practitioners, and continuing education for instructors. The Sonia Sumar Method integrates breath, movement, sound, and relaxation while honouring each individual's own rhythm and communication style, with no competition or performance expectations.

Who It Helps

Children and adults with Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, rare syndromes, and other neurodevelopmental or physical differences. Families and educators seeking qualified adaptive yoga practitioners also benefit.
