About this resource

About

The Theatre Development Fund (TDF) is a nonprofit organisation that has served New York City's theatre community since 1968. Its Accessibility Programmes, developed over four decades, are a national model for making live performance accessible to audiences with disabilities — the largest such effort at any theatre service organisation in the US.

What It Does

TDF coordinates Open Captioned Performances (where captions are displayed on a screen at the side of the stage), Audio Described Performances (with pre-show tactile tours and live narration), Relaxed Performances (modified lighting and sound for audiences with autism or sensory sensitivities), and American Sign Language Interpreted Performances. TDF's accessibility calendar lists all upcoming accessible performances across Broadway, Off-Broadway, and Off-Off-Broadway. Many tickets are available at discounted rates.

Who It Helps

Theatregoers who are Deaf or hard of hearing (captioned and ASL), blind or low-vision (audio-described), autistic or have sensory processing differences (relaxed performances), and anyone for whom standard theatre environments are inaccessible. The TDF accessibility calendar is the most comprehensive accessible theatre listing in New York City.
