About
The United States Handcycling Federation (USHF) is the national governing body for handcycling — a form of cycling powered by hand cranks — in the United States. The USHF sanctions road and track races and promotes handcycling as both a recreational and competitive sport for people with lower-limb impairments.
What It Does
USHF sanctions national championships and regional race events, maintains the national ranking system, and selects and supports Team USA athletes for international competition including UCI Para-cycling events and the Paralympic Games. The federation also promotes recreational handcycling, with resources on getting started, equipment selection, and finding local rides and events.
Who It Helps
People with spinal cord injuries, lower-limb amputations, and other conditions preventing standard bicycle use who want to cycle recreationally or competitively. Handcycles range from recumbent models for people with minimal trunk control to upright models for those with more function — the USHF website has guidance on choosing the right type.
