About this resource

About

WheelchairJimmy was created by Jim Parsons, a paraplegic who has used a manual wheelchair for more than four decades. Frustrated by the gap between hotel "ADA-compliant" claims and the reality experienced by wheelchair users, Jim began documenting the real-world accessibility of hotels, restaurants, and attractions from a full-time wheelchair user's perspective.

What It Does

The site publishes detailed written reviews and video walkthroughs for hundreds of venues — primarily hotels in major US cities — assessing entrance access, room dimensions, bathroom configurations (roll-in shower availability, grab bar placement, toilet height, turning radius), common area navigation, and restaurant table accessibility. Each venue receives a Wheelchair Jimmy Accessibility Rating (WJAR) reflecting functional usability. A YouTube channel with over 200,000 views provides video walkthroughs complementing the written content.

Who It Helps

WheelchairJimmy is aimed primarily at manual wheelchair users planning travel in the United States. Its focus on practical, functional accessibility — rather than legal checkbox compliance — makes it especially useful for travellers who need to know whether a hotel will actually work for their needs before booking, not just whether it meets the minimum legal standard.
