About this resource

About

Wintergreen Adaptive Sports (WAS) is an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit based at Wintergreen Resort in Nelson County, Virginia, and a chapter affiliate of Move United. Founded to improve the lives of people with disabilities through outdoor sports, WAS is operated entirely by volunteer instructors and runs on community support and fundraising.

What It Does

On the slopes, WAS delivers instruction in two-track skiing, three-track skiing, four-track skiing, mono-skiing, bi-skiing, and adaptive snowboarding. Seated disciplines like the bi-ski and mono-ski allow participants with limited or no leg function to ski independently. The programme extends into warmer months with adaptive kayaking and canoeing on Virginia waterways.

Who It Helps

WAS serves individuals with amputations, autism, developmental disabilities, neurological diseases, spinal cord injuries, visual impairments, and veterans with service-related injuries. All ability levels are welcomed, from first-timers to experienced adaptive skiers seeking to advance their technique.
